Our Rating: 4.6

This is a fantastic hardtail e-MTB that is suitable for well experienced mountain bikers and even those city goers who want to explore a bit more, it has an abundance of power and torque to get you over the trails you want, including a few jumps.

Speed is definitely on your side with this bike, with the lightness of the frame and the placement of the battery gives you the best of the motor with the reliability of the steering also helping.

It is expected that some people will want to replace the tyres, and I recommend this if you are looking for more grip on the trails and a softer rubber.

  • Lighter, versatile and more powerful.
  • More support from the battery for different riding styles

  • Tyres don’t dig into terrain and have harder rubber on them.
  • If you have the smallest frame it can only hold the 504Wh battery

Our Verdict

The Grand Canyon ON:9 has many useful features. One of these is the dropper post, the ability to put your seat down when you are going downhill or over some jumps on the trails is perfect, with the ease of popping it back up ready for those uphill climbs, even with enough span for the taller riders.  The 2.6in Schwalbe tyres will need good brakes to slow them down, the Canyon has big 203mm brake rotors on the front and rear so the stopping power from the Shimano brakes is dealt with, although the tyres have lots of cushioning and are stable they do have a harder rubber than other mountain bike tyres and would benefit from a swap over.  They do not dig in and provide enough grip on the ground so if you are travelling over wet trails they may feel a lot less stable than if you went on a dry day.

The tyres also have less traction so if you are going uphill and your mode is on the most power, there may be potential for a wheelspin and this may put you off balance until you are moving. If you are an experienced mountain bike rider you may want to be careful of the Shimano STEPS cranks as this can reduce your power quicker from using the flatter pedals, you may want to swap these out if you are going to be using it as your main bike and are riding heavier trails.

Grand Canyon: ON 9 Performance Overview

The moment you get on this bike you will be impressed, it’s fast and the framework has been thought about – it makes you feel stability and though you are stuck to the ground but with the ease of pedalling over bumpy grounds and not upsetting how stable you feel.

>Everything has been framed to be precise and reactive to how you steer, from the balanced head angle to the wide bar and short stem, the steering is under your control without feeling as though it is too stiff or unstable. You are able to steer round corners easily as you lean into the bike and it never seems to make your position unsettled even at heights. The Canyon is the most similar to a mountain bike you can get with the ability to control it over rough trails and jumps without feeling too much as though you are relying on power, though when you go uphill you certainly notice the help it gets and you go through the 12-speed Shimano gears to be able to help deliver the power and drag you up those steep hills.

You can download the app to alter the power and battery to your needs but it does come with 3 modes which are Eco, Trail and Boost. These allow you to interchange between off-road trails if you need to and preserve power with eco mode for if you are on flatter surfaces and you are not needing help up those steep hills.
